Getting started
To learn to drive on British roads, you must meet several legal requirements. These are:
- You must hold a valid provisional driving licence.
- You must be of an appropriate age to drive the vehicle.
- You must display learner driver identification ‘L’ plates.
All learner drivers must be supervised. The other person must be over 21, and have held a valid full drivers licence for 3, or more years.
Driving tests
Theory
- The theory part of the driving test is designed to test key driving facts, situational awareness, hazard perception and knowledge of the roads.
- Everyone is required to pass the theory part of the driving test, before they may take the practical part of the driving test.
Practical
- The purpose of the practical driving test is to find out whether you can drive safely, without supervision, on the roads.
- The Practical Driving Test is straightforward. It lasts approximately 38-40 minutes and is conducted from your local driving test centre.
